Acute pain in left side of neck with numbness on back of head?
I currently have terrible pain on the left side of the back of my neck radiating upward to the back of my head, with a numbness on the left side of the back of my head…. Any ideas? It’s constant…all day, but can get so bad I’m incompacitated, crunched up crying.. It’s impossible to sleep, heat/cold can help/ or make it worse. Trying to get an appointment with a massage therapist, and have been taking muscle relaxants……. I’m lost!
It sounds like it may be occipital neuralgia. Who gave you the muscle relaxants (recent trip to the MD or old prescription???) I’d go see a MD, as it is likely something that will respond more to an anti-inflammitory– you can try Advil/Aleve, or the chiropractor. Sometimes, if that doesn’t help the MD can do a tiny injection of lidocaine/marcaine to numb the area.
Acupuncture is also sometimes helpful.
good luck

you should see a chiropractor or a therapist who can do acupuncture. i get a lot of horrible cramps in my neck and sometimes they last for days…but normally a heating pad helps. maybe yours is a lot worse though, so i would say get it checked out

Sounds like a pinched nerve. This could be caused by alot of things, muscle spasims being one. I have a bad back and have strange things like this happen. if heat and cold make it hurt it may not be a muscle issue, but something else. Could have slept wrong and something slipped out of place. Check with your doc for the best plan of action. Let them know what you have tried at home for it already.

I had something very similar. The doctor diagnosed Occipital Neuralgia. Soft massage, heat, and anti-inflammatory pain relievers..like ibuprofen. I used Aleve, and a heating pad. It lasted about two weeks, and was caused by my husband using too much pressure when giving me a massage for a headache.
