Would like some professional advice on kidney dialysis?

June 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in what is kidney dialysis | 2 Comments »

My grandmother is 89 and we are waiting for word if she is going to need kidney dialysis. She walks with a walker, long stints she needs a wheel chair. She goes to bed at 9pm and sleeps until 12pm, after that she naps and reads in the chair for the day. She has ahlsheimers, dimensia and high blood pressure. This decision might have to be made for her in the end. I would like an professional opinion on how hard this treatment is on the elderly?

Firstly I must say that dementia and Alzheimer’s are two very different medical problems. Dementia is a perfectly natural occurrence with aging, Alzheimer’s is due to a medical anomaly in which glial cells in the brain form fibrous tangles and damage healthy neurons. It is a much more serious condition that can be as severe as the person having no recollection of their life or who they are. I’d suggest if she is still coherent enough at the moment, have her document he wishes for medical treatment. Dialysis can be difficult for anyone, but if it is necessary to continue living I’d say it is worth it.

Spiritually, is taking a person off Kidney Dialysis killing them?

June 18th, 2010 -- Posted in what is kidney dialysis | 10 Comments »

My great grandfather is 94 years old. He’s been on kidney dialysis for several months and barely has enough strength to remain proped up in a chair. He’s in a nursing home and is basically incoherent.

My great-grandmother feels taking him off dialysis will be ‘killing’ him, something like murder.

What are your thoughts on this?

I think you should all ask Grandpa what he wants. If he is coherent do what he wishes, if he isn’t think back to discussions you all may have had with him about how he would like to have lived out his life or what measures he would have wanted to take to prolong his life despite suffering. Certainly if he has been on dialysis for any length of time he has known how ill he is. I am a Hospice Nurse and if he were my father I would let him go with dignity, but I would NEVER presume to make that decision for any other family. I wish you all the best of luck and I am sorry you are going through this sad time.

Previously the patients had to rush to Ahmedabad or Nadiad under going 8 to 10 hours strenous and expensive journey which was very painful. So this kidney dialysis centre is being a prime necessity for this area. It was established with the inspiration and blessings of Rev. Devprasadji Maharaj.

New Hope For People With Kidney Disease and on Dialysis

May 9th, 2010 -- Posted in what is kidney dialysis | No Comments »

For more info visit www.newsinfusion.com

March 11, 2010 – As the U.S. population ages and the incidence of diabetes and high blood pressure rises, the number of end-stage renal (kidney) disease patients receiving dialysis is expected to increase dramatically in coming years. Kidney dialysis is a life-saving treatment, with one major problem: it requires repeated medical procedures to unclog blood vessels or it stops working. And once patients run out of dialysis access sites due to blockages, their only option is a transplant with a long waiting list.

Chronic kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the U.S. But for the 500,000 people on dialysis or living with a transplanted kidney, and those people who may be at risk, a new treatment could extend the time kidney dialysis patients can be treated with dialysis before needing a kidney transplant.

In dialysis, veins that support the procedure cannot do so over the long term. They collapse and need to be opened, typically with balloon angioplasty, similar to the procedure commonly done for the heart. A new advancement in the form of a stent graft for these veins could become the new gold-standard in treatment and dialysis.

Dr. Ziv Haskal, chief of vascular and interventional radiology division at University of Maryland Medical Center, was principal investigator for a study on the new therapy published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Haskal will be available for interviews on March 10, 2010 to talk to your viewers about kidney disease, their risks, and the study offering hope to people on dialysis.
